A Thin Client - Fat On Features

A thin client is a computer that functions mainly as a terminal and includes just enough hardware and software to log onto a server where it can get applications and even additional processing power. A fat client is a more fully functional computer that usually operates as a stand-alone workstation but may also be connected to a network. The RX6151 is a 1U rackmount computer that more closely fits the thin client mold and carries a thin-client price tag yet could work nicely as a stand-alone as well.

The system comes with an Intel Pentium 4 processor running at 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM and an 80GB SATA-300 hard drive. That's more than enough power for a terminal and probably plenty compared to the average stand-alone workstation. It also is equipped with a DVDRW and a motherboard that has audio, video and gigabit LAN onboard. There is one open PCI slot for expansion.

The system is so simple it requires only one 97mm fan inside the heavy-duty steel case. In all, only the CPU fan, the fan on the 250Watt power supply and the hard drive and DVDRW are moving parts, promising long-life and dependability as a thin client. With 80GB of hard disk space, you could certainly house a complete operating system and maybe an office suite of applications. But if you're running a Unix-type operating system you may only need to store a basic kernel and some protocols for logging onto and sharing the resources of the server.

Certainly any Pentium 4 functioning near 3GHz is going to be plenty fast, even the older socket 478 and 400MHz front side bus, and 512MB RAM should also be enough to keep large programs and files working without any time lags. The RX6151 may even offer enough hardware to function as a print server or email server.

This 1U rackmount computer is only 15 inches deep so it can fit under or on top of a desk or table as easily as in a rack cabinet. Its short depth and light weigh - only 18 pounds - makes it ideal for use in a portable rack. The sleek black case has some nice touches to it like front access to two USB 2.0 ports. There's two more USB ports in the rear.

As compact as this case is there is still room for a second internal hard drive. The RX6151 sells for under 0, offering fat client hardware at a thin client price.
